Smoke and Vapor: They Aren’t the Same!
Let’s be real here: Any vaper knows that smoking and vaping are galaxies apart. Smoking cigarettes has proven to be one of the leading killers of people who partake in that indulgence while vaping has helped a lot of people kick that habit. Why then, do people continually lump vaping and smoking together?
A lot of it has to do with media misinformation and bias. Some of that could be intentional and some of it could just be simple ignorance. People see only the surface similarities: Vapers inhale something and exhale a (sometimes massive) cloud of something else. Close enough, right? Because of what they may have heard on their evening news about the e-juice containing something akin to antifreeze they stop there and stick with their preconceived notion.
We're going to go farther into some of the reasons people confuse the two, and then provide you with some facts to help you educate someone the next time they cause a fuss about you vaping.
The Demonizing of Vaporizing: In today's media, it has become the cool thing to over sensationalize a story to boost ratings. Often this is done with shock reporting, fear mongering, etc. Case in point, many stories on vaping, how terrible it is, and how you're going to die by being near someone doing it. They often report that the main ingredient in the e-liquid is diethylene glycol, when it is in fact propylene glycol (close enough, even though one is used in breathing treatments for asthma, pneumonia, etc.). People also love to tout the line "You don't even know what is in the liquid," when in fact any reputable e-liquid maker is going to use only the finest and safest ingredients. They may also have their own personal prejudices to the very act of smoking which, because of the similar look to the untrained eye (exhaling a cloud), they automatically push on vapers.
It Really is not as Bad as They Say it is: When it comes down to it, the very most basic difference between vaping and smoking is simple. There is no fire. While there is some heat involved, nothing is burning, hence NO SMOKE. An electric coil is turning a liquid into a vapor, like how a warm-mist humidifier might. While some vapers do have their setup give them a hotter vapor, it still is not the same fundamentally. Not to mention that the average cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals and has almost 600 different ingredients; meanwhile the average e-liquid is made up of 4 ingredients – PG, VG, flavoring and nicotine). Probably the worst thing about vaping is that a very small number of people may have an adverse allergic reaction to propylene glycol (PG) - to which they can simply stop vaping. Finally, the more experienced vapers use little to no nicotine, as it generally messes with the flavor.
Overall, vaping gets a bad rap because it looks like smoking. In the grand scheme of things, vaping is generally considered to be a better alternative to smoking. And it also helps many kick the tobacco habit.
