Not Really the Same: Tank Coils and Pod Cartridge Coils
So many of us have spent years using sub-ohm vaping systems that require a good deal of maintenance. Sub-ohm systems require the regular replacement of coils in order to function properly. This means that we spend a good deal of money each year on high-quality coils that are designed to properly heat e-liquid so that it may become abundant, thick and delicious vapor.
Many serious vapers put a lot of effort into researching and purchasing the very best coils for their unique vaping setup. These days, sub-ohm coils come in a wide variety of sizes, resistance levels and materials. Each type of coil has a different effect on the overall vaping experience.
However, as the pod style continues to take over the vaping industry, the way in which we approach coils is changing radically. In fact, many vapers don't quite understand the unique ways in which pod cartridge coils differ from sub-ohm coils.
Luckily, we're here to help. We're going to break down the key differences between the sub-ohm coils that you're used to and the pod cartridge coils that allow us to enjoy the perfect amount of salt nic vape juice while we use our portable pod mod systems.
What Exactly Does a Vape Coil Do?
A vape coil is a simple coil of wire that has a wicking material running through its center. The wicking material absorbs a specific amount of e-liquid while the wire heats the juice, allowing it to turn from liquid into thick, luscious vapor.
The coil must be heated to a certain temperature in order to produce a successful hit that satisfies the vaper's cravings. It's heated by the electricity that's produced by the device's battery.
Size
One of the most obvious differences between sub-ohm coils and pod cartridge coils is size. Because sub-ohm MODs are larger, the coils must be big enough to accommodate the amount of power that these devices reach. Sub-ohm coils must be big enough to absorb a lot of e-liquid at a time. Otherwise, they can burn out as the coil is exposed to a high wattage level.
Because pod mods are low-wattage devices, they don't need to absorb as much vape juice per hit in order to produce a satisfying amount of vapor. That's why the coils that’re found in pod cartridges are extremely small by comparison.
Resistance Level
Because pod mods operate at low wattage levels, they have fairly high resistance levels. It's rare to find a pod cartridge coil that's below one ohm. Meanwhile, sub-ohm coils don't exceed one ohm.
Visibility
When we use sub-ohm systems, we can clearly see the coil in the center of the tank. However, most pod cartridges conceal their coils.
Wicking Material
Sub-ohm coils are stuffed with lots of cotton so that they can absorb plenty of vape juice. Because pod cartridge coils don't need to absorb as much nic salt e-liquid per puff for instance, they contain thinner wicks that are typically made from synthetic fibers.
The Difference are Apparent
As you can see, the coil that comes with a pod cartridge is very different from the traditional sub-ohm coil that we're used to. However, a pod cartridge's coil is perfectly designed to ensure that the pod mod delivers the most satisfying experience possible.
