Back to the Vaping Basics: Single Coil vs Dual Coil Configurations

For those of you who have been vaping for a while now, you’ve probably gained at least some knowledge about what coils are and how they work.  Maybe you have a basic grasp of Ohm’s Law and how to choose the right coil resistance level for your vape tank.  However, there are other factors to consider when it comes to selecting the right tank for your needs, and one of the biggest ones is whether or not you want a single or dual coil configuration.

While this may sound intimidating, it’s actually quite simple.  And, we’re going to explain how each of these coils work and what their unique benefits and drawbacks are so that you can make the best decision for your unique vaping setup as well as your personal preferences.

Coils 101

To understand the differences between single and dual coil configurations, it’s important to get into how coils work.  As you know, coils are what heat the vape juice so that it turns from a watery substance into fluffy clouds and nice flavor production.  And, that coil gets heated by the battery of your device.

Within the walls of your coil is a coiled wire that does all of the hard work.  There are also two terminals, one being positive and one being negative.  The coil must be attached to both in order to properly receive power from your vape device’s battery.

Single Coils

Obviously, a single coil consists of a single wire.  This means that all of your battery’s power is being fed into one coil.  And, the right single coil can handle all of that power just fine, allowing it to turn your vape juice into those glorious clouds that you crave.

Pros

  • One of the biggest advantages to using a single coil is that it uses less battery power, meaning that you won’t have to recharge your battery nearly as often. You’ll also go through less vape juice.  This is because of the fact that a single coil doesn’t require all that much to turn your e-juice into vapor.
  • If you’re building your own coils, single coil configurations are by far the simplest type of coils to build. So, most DIY vapers get started making single coils before learning more advanced builds.

Cons

  • One drawback is that single coils need a bit more heating time.
  • Additionally, single coils won’t give you the super thick, huge clouds in the way that dual coils can.

Dual Coils

Dual coils, as the name implies, consist of two coils that are contained together in your coil wall.  Basically, the battery of your device transfers an even amount of heat to both coils, meaning that its structure can do far more work than a single configuration.

Pros

  • Dual coils are most popular among cloud-chasers who want to see incredibly dense, abundant vapor whenever they exhale.
  • Because two coils are working at the same time, your clouds will be quite impressive.
  • Dual coils are also great for heating up your e-liquid very quickly.

Cons

  • Dual coils will drain your battery at a faster pace than single coils.
  • They also require a lot more e-juice per hit for obvious reasons, meaning that you’ll go through more vape juice in a shorter period of time.
  • If you’re interested in making your own coils, know that dual coils are a bit more complicated to build than single coils. However, with some practice and research, you’ll be able to master this type of configuration eventually.  Note: Many DIY vapers feel that it’s worth it because of the benefits that this type of coil has to offer.

The Coil Configuration Choice is Yours!

Ultimately, whether you should purchase a single or dual coil configuration is totally your call.  Like most things when it comes to vaping, this decision comes down to your individual vaping preferences.  We encourage you to experiment with both types of coils so that you can stick with the one that brings you the most satisfaction while you vape.
