5 Reasons Why Most Salt-Based E-Liquids Have a Balanced Ratio
Have you noticed that basically every salt nicotine vape juice on the market has a base of 50 percent vegetable glycerin (VG) and 50 percent propylene glycol (PG)? To experienced vapers who once exclusively used sub-ohm systems, this might seem more than a little strange. After all, these two base ingredients have very different properties, meaning that finding the right balance between the two requires a lot of consideration. So, why doesn’t nic salt e-liquid offer the same variety?
There’s a very practical reason why this ratio is the gold standard as far as this type of vape juice is concerned. In fact, as you’ll soon discover, playing around with the ratio could actually have negative effects, making your pod session anything but pleasurable.
Reason #1: You’re Using a Low-Wattage Device
Think about the sub-ohm setup that you used to use on a daily basis. That large, heavy box mod allowed you to navigate between loads of different settings and gave you the ability to choose between an enormous range of wattage levels. Reason #2: The Nicotine Isn’t the Same
Freebase nicotine is an incredibly unstable form of nicotine, meaning that minor adjustments to a sub-ohm device can throw off the e-liquid’s ability to carry that nicotine when you fire your mod. For this reason, those who use sub-ohm devices have to carefully select the right VG/PG ratio in order to prevent the nicotine from destabilizing. This is why certain ratios and certain output settings can make the juice feel extremely harsh when inhaled.
Salt-based nicotine, on the other hand, is highly stable. Therefore, playing around with different ratios isn’t really necessary.

Coils used with sub-ohm systems also require the user to explore different ratios. Because these coils contain thick, large cotton wicks, they easily become flooded or dry depending on the e-liquid that’s in them and the mod’s settings. For instance, high VG e-liquids are known to gunk up coils, rendering them useless.
Pod mods, meanwhile, have different kinds of coils. Their wicks are made from small synthetic fibers. Plus, they’re not nearly as likely to get gunked up by e-liquid.

Another reason why the 50/50 ratio dominates the salt nic vaping industry is because it just works. It seems to provide users with the perfect throat hit, the smoothest vapor and the richest, cleanest flavor.
Reason #5: No More Clouds
With pod mod systems, it’s all about getting that glorious punch of nicotine. Users of these devices aren’t nearly as concerned with the size and thickness of their clouds. Max VG e-liquids are synonymous with massive fog. Those who use pod systems will never produce those clouds of glory as they’re using a low-wattage device. Therefore, a high VG e-juice isn’t necessary.
